About the event
An opportunity to try terere and its hotter cousin mate, the alcohol free drink of choice across South America. You've probably clocked South American footballers enjoying it after matches, indeed it was the England team's beverage of choice around the World Cup in 2014 as the manager thought it would lead us to victory. It didn't but that's probably not entirely the fault of the drink.
Terere is a non alcoholic herbal drink from Paraguay, not disimilar to green tea. It boasts multiple health claims including aiding weight loss and being good for the heart. Many people drink it with iced water while others add flavoured 'remedios' including lemon and mint or even juice. In Argentina and Brazil, people drink the same herb but with hot water.
You'll be given a guampa (cup) and bombilla (straw) ready filled with mate herb and then have the opportunity to add a range of flavoured waters and juices to taste. There'll be an introduction to what terere and mate are and who the farmers we are working with are. You'll be shown how to drink it and then be let loose on all the different flavour profiles you can try.
The mate herb we'll be using is sourced from a cooperative in the south of Paraguay. It's not otherwise available in the UK at the moment.
The price includes five different drink types and snacks.
